BLM Launches Effort to Facilitate Renewable Energy Development on Federal Lands

In response to the increased national demand for clean renewable energy, the Bureau of Land Management today announced it will prepare a programmatic environmental impact statement (PEIS) analyzing areas with high potential for geothermal energy development.

According to a notice published in today’s Federal Register, the PEIS will examine the environmental impacts of boosting geothermal leasing in areas with high potential for near-term exploration and development of geothermal resources. If deemed appropriate by the PEIS, the BLM will amend the land use plans in those areas to allow for expanded leasing.

“The BLM is sitting on the largest supply of geothermal energy in this country, and it is time to launch an aggressive program to develop those resources,” said BLM Acting Directo...

How do I secure my CMS Webs site?

A simple question with a complex answer! It is complex because security issues arise from a variety of sources: your code, your server, the other things running on your server, the users, etc. While CMS Webs itself is relatively secure, you may still experience problems if the server is compromised or if a user gives up a password. • Delete your old installation directory (don’t just rename it!).
  • Implement HTTP access controls for your admin login.
  • Make all your admin passwords at least 8 characters and containing symbols and numbers as well as letters.

There’s more that you can do, but it is outside the scope of thi...

Forest Service Publishes New Rule For Energy-Related Permit

The Forest Service today announced a new rule that permits it to respond quickly to applications for oil-and-gas exploration on Forest Service land already under federal leases.

The rule is a categorical exclusion for land under lease that has already undergone environmental analysis consistent with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) guidelines. The additional analysis previously required by a new oil-and-gas exploration and development application took a minimum of six months. With the new rule, an application can be processed much faster unless there are extraordinary circumstances such as the presence of threatened or endangered species or their designated habitat, wilderness areas, inventoried roadless areas, wetlands, and archeological or historic sites...

Can I show different users different content?

Within limits. The CMS Webs User Manager currently only supports a few levels (“groups”) of users. You can show different content to different groups, but you cannot show each individual user a unique set of content. Put another way, every user in the group will see the same content as the other users in the group. If you really need this functionality, there are some third party components which add additional flexibility.
